Program Notes

According to Apple Music's data, I have listened to movement one of Ravel's String Quartet in F Major 128 times as of November 15, 2021. This work by Ravel has influenced me as a composer from the first time I heard it, and has resonated with me on a personal level. I listened to it most during my reign as Miss America, which was one of the most intense seasons of my life. I found a calmness in the complexity of the music. Around my 28th birthday I began to research Ravel's string quartet and found that he wrote it at the age of 28. He did not win the prize he submitted his piece to, so that made me admire Ravel's work even more because of his resilience. I immediately knew that I wanted to write something that captured my moment of being a composer who has circled the sun 28 times, and I wanted to write it before turning 29. Vingt-Huit simply means "28" in French, but this number has come to represent so much to me. I'm a huge believer in God's timing, and this year I've seen so many things I've prayed for happen. I was thrilled to work with the Durward Ensemble and my main goals were to play with color and layers since the ensemble is so unique. I also began to emphasize rhythm, and unisons, which represent the strength and continuity I've found within my different styles as an artist. I see this piece as a symbol of how far I have come in the 11 years I have been composing in a professional manner, and a reminder to never stop learning and growing.
